Canyonlands

One of my national park guidebooks calls Canyonlands the "most rugged part of the lower 48." I'd visited a couple summers back, but only Island in the Sky, the plateau thousands of feet above the eroded desert tracts.

This time, I visited that unit of the park, but only as the Utah sun set after hiking nine miles through the buttery tendrils of The Needles unit. Our hike led us out to Chesler Park, then back to the trailhead through Elephant Canyon.
